If you have ever visited New England or the Canadian Maritimes, you will no
doubt have seen and admired the wonderful hand carved signs gracing homes, inns,
restaurants and many businesses. They are eye catching, elegant and readable (which
is, after all, a sign's job).
The sign carving tradition dates back to Colonial days when settlers who lived
near the Atlantic coast would comb the beaches after each storm in the hope of
finding something of value from a shipwreck. A highly desirable find would be
a carved stern or quarter board or perhaps even a carved figurehead. These treasures
were then used to decorate the homes of the finder.
When shipbuilding became a large industry in the 'New World', the ship carvers
would create pub signs and storefronts in the off season. Today, these types of
signs are still in great demand. We at Dakota Mill Signmakers are dedicated to
producing high quality, hand crafted signs in the true 'Cape Cod' or 'New England'
tradition. The emphasis is on simplicity, elegance and readability. We use the
finest paint and materials available today and your sign will stand up for years in even the harshest weather conditions.
